Ethiopian coffees are my favorites. They tend to be very wild and untamed in their flavor profile and can range from leather and spices to floral and fruity. I’ve tasted a lot of Ethiopian coffee and I have tasted blueberry notes in quite a few of those coffees; but this one takes the cake. (ahem, blueberry cake perhaps.)
Scott at Herkimer has found some of the best Ethiopia Yirgacheffe I have ever tasted. His cupping notes for this single origin are as follows:
Throwing down with some Misty Valley…I know, it’s been available for awhile. If you haven’t heard of or tried this yirg you must take a gander. It’s one of the few that tastes exactly like it smells all the way through the process. Exploding Lilac and Froot Loop lemon blueberry on the nose, sweet red and black seed fruit in the mouth. Almost yemenish with a different spicy depth. Oily vine and powdered sugar texture. Fairly full bodied for a yirgie. Malted chocolate and a bit of salty caramel mixed with mint leaves on the finish. Nice long finish, too.
It is truly a great coffee and frankly, I tasted blueberry all the way through. It is available in the store for $13.50 for a 12oz bag. It is a unique coffee in that it’s sweetness is consistent through out the cup and doesn’t ever get an acrid finish. Scott was able to get a limited amount so get some before it is all gone.
